Vienna International Airport, also called Schwechat, as the nearby town, is the busiest airport in Austria. It is the main hub of Austrian Airlines and its subsidiaries. It was originally built in 1938, but given considerable development only since1970s. It received Olympic teams, when Austria twice hosted Winter Olympics. Pope John Paul II during his visits to Austria also used this airport.

Airport is equipped with the latest technologies. It formerly had a Harrods chain department store, but it closed in 2003. The 109-meter control tower presents a unique laser show at night. There are three terminals, a new project, SKYLINK, will be designed to handle very big passenger aircrafts, as Airbus A380. New tower is to be finished till 2015. The underground railway station will be enlarged and train connection with Bratislava is planned.
