Kaiserscharrn is a typical dessert made of shredded pancakes and stewed fruit. The legend says, it was invented for the Emperor Franz Joseph. Sachertorte is one of the most popular desserts, originating from as far as 1832. It is served in most of Viennese patisseries. In fact, it is a chocolate cake with interesting blend of ingredients.
Apfelstrudel is the characteristic Austrian dessert. The main ingredients are thin dough, apples and cinnamon. It is served hot with either ice=cream or vanilla sauce. Other desserts, such as doughnuts or Topfelgolatschen are eaten for breakfast or between meals. Other flour dishes can also be offered as main course.
To accompany a delicious meal, a dash of good wine or beer is essential. The country has a wide choice of white and red wines. The best of whites is the Gruner Veltliner, a classic red is Zweigelt. In summer Gespritzen cocktail is popular. This consists of an eight of a litre of white wine and the equal amount of soda water. Among Viennese beers Seiterl is probably the best option
