The official currency of Austria is the euro. 1 euro = 100 euro cents. Foreign currency can be brought in and out of Vienna without any restrictions. Exchange rates fluctuate depending on the dollar, on which foreign currencies are locked up. It is highly advisable to check exchange rates of foreign currencies compared to dollar and pound sterling, because they may differ depending on the time.
Exchange rates can be more favourable at the point of arrival that the point of departure, but it would be helpful to exchange a sum covering airport transfer or at least basic expenses to avoid queues at the airport exchange bureau. Currency is best exchanged at banks, not bureaus, hotels or shops.
Travelers' cheques, such as American Express or Thomas Cook, are also convenient, they are easily converted in most of the banks, airports and authorized travel agencies. The service can be ordered in advance.
ATMs are prevalent in the city and even small local towns. They are linked in a national network that includes also major international banks. Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Diners, Cirrus and PLUS have Austrian banks listed in their network. But the travelers should make sure the PINs of their cards are compatible with Austrian system. It uses four-digit code, so those who have six-digit one should obtain a new pin from their bank.
Credit cards are universally accepted, cash advances could be also withdrawn from any bank. Austrian banks are open Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. On Thursday most banks are open until 5.30 p.m., but close between 12.30 p.m. and 1.30 p.m.
