Theatre is undoubtedly a part of Viennese lifestyle. The city's main stage is "Theater an der Wien". It was founded in 1801 by Emanuel Schikaneder, the author of libretto for Mozart's "Magic Flute". It staged many legendary performances, such as Fiddler on the Roof, Man of La Mancha, the first world premiere of an Austrian Musical, Heroes Heroes, box-office hits by Andrew Lloyd Webber - Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar. These were later followed by Cats and Phantom of the Opera. The theatre then had its own productions Freudiana, Elisabeth and Mozart! running on the world stage with great success. Burgtheater was founded by Emperor Joseph II in 1776 as court, later national theatreIt was relocated in 1888 in the newly constructed Classicist building on the Ringstrasse boulevard. The repertoire mainly comprises classical pieces. The seconfdary venue, used by the same group, is Akademietheater with smaller stage and highlight on contemporary plays.
Dschungel Wien - Theater für Kinder, Familien, Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene is not strictly a theater, but an open cultural center for children and teens. It offers music, dance, theatrical performances, expressive art, literature, including international productions and Austrian ones. It was opened in 2004 but rapidly shot to fame for very interesting experimental program.
Raimundtheater has been a major venue for operettas for decades. Nowadays many musicals are staged there, some of the theatre's own productions, as dance of the Vampires, Wake Up and Barbarella competing with renowned ones.
Ronacher, originally founded in 1888 as German-language variety theatre. Designed in splendid belle époque style, given modern touch by Coop Himmelblau company. Specialises mainly in musicals.
Schauspielhaus features challenging modern programme, highly praised by critics and audience. Schonbrunner Schlosstheater is a small rococo style theatre in Schonbrunn castle. The venue is the residence for Kammeroper company. Serapionstheater im Odeon is a modern research stage, dedicated to experimental music, costumes and mime.
