Sachertorte is one of the most popular desserts, originating from as far as 1832. It is served in most of Viennese patisseries. In fact, it is a chocolate cake with interesting blend of ingredients.
Apfelstrudel is the characteristic Austrian dessert. The main ingredients are thin dough, apples and cinnamon. It is served hot with either ice=cream or vanilla sauce. Other desserts, such as doughnuts or Topfelgolatschen are eaten for breakfast or between meals. Other flour dishes can also be offered as main course.
To accompany a delicious meal, a dash of good wine or beer is essential. The country has a wide choice of white and red wines. The best of whites is the Gruner Veltliner, a classic red is Zweigelt.
