Vienna has a moderate continental climate. The influence of dry climate of Hungary causes less precipitation than in alpine regions. Summer is generally warm and sunny, winter is cold, but not severe. The weather differs from year to year, in recent times showing surprising tendencies.The coldest months with possible subzero temperatures are December and January. The average temperature in January is from -4°C to 1°C. There can be prolonged cold spells. Snowfalls are common and at times can be rather heavy. The streets can be iced over and slippery.
Spring begins in the middle of March, and often merges seamlessly with summer, as in May it is already very warm. April and May are mostly sunny, it is the most pleasant time to visit the city, as well as early summer and autumn.
Summer is hot, with the temperatures reaching up to 30°C, though the average temperatures hover between 15 and 25°C. Thunderstorms occur rather often, all of a sudden and can be heavy, though never long.
In September it becomes considerably colder, the weather is very changeable. Autumn often begins overnight, all of a sudden. Winds, not strong, but constant, are usually rather chilly and make the temperature seem lower than it is.
